5 Browns providing entertainment for Enterprise Mentors fundraiser

Enterprise Mentors International, a Salt Lake-based microlending organization with operations in the Philippines and Central and South America, will hold its annual fundraising gala Oct. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the downtown Marriott Hotel ballroom. The gala will feature a performance by The 5 Browns and the presentation of the Mentors' annual International Humanitarian Award to Padma Venkataraman.

The 5 Browns, five siblings all in their 20s, first hit the top of the nation's classical-music charts in 2005 with their self-titled album. The next year, their "No Boundaries" album was No. 1 on the charts for 21 weeks.

Venkataraman is a leading figure in India's fight against leprosy and its resulting stigma. She has worked to educate and lift thousands of leprosy-afflicted families from poverty.

"Our annual fundraising gala has two primary purposes," said Mark Petersen, Mentors' chief executive officer and president. "First, we want to give as many individuals as possible the opportunity to assist us in our dream of teaching, mentoring and providing financial services to lift the poor from poverty with a hand up, not a hand out. Second, we want to raise awareness in our country that there really are effective and responsible ways of solving the world's massive poverty problem."

Mentors, a nonprofit organization, began its work in 1990.

A few tables and individual seats still remain for purchase. For more information or to make reservations, go online to www.enterprise-mentors.org or call 801-676-7776.
