"One Step Beyond" and "Bonanza" have been on DVD for many years — always in cheap, public-domain sets that offer lousy picture and sound. But now, for the first time, both shows have been released in official first-season sets with high-quality prints.

They lead off this look at vintage TV that is new to DVD this week.

"One Step Beyond: Official First Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1959, three discs, b/w, $49.99). "The Twilight Zone" began in the fall of 1959 — but the previous January saw the debut of this show, a similar fantasy-anthology originally titled "Alcoa Presents" (after the sponsor, Alcoa aluminum) and hosted by John Newland.

The spooky half-hour stories are allegedly based on true incidents without logical explanations, frequently with twist endings, and the shows in this first season are quite enjoyable — and some are downright chilling. Stars include Cloris Leachman, Mike Connors, Ross Martin.

Extras: full frame, 22 episodes, extended (by five minutes) version of the pilot, audio interview, promos/bumpers, trailers

"Bonanza: The Official first Season, Volumes 1 and 2" (CBS/Paramount, 1959-60, eight discs, $69.98). The first hour-long color show on television, this program was a huge hit and ran longer than any other Western except "Gunsmoke." The stories revolve around Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) and his three sons (Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon), ranchers on the Ponderosa in Nevada near Virginia City.

The pilot episode, which features Yvonne De Carlo, is a bit stiff, and the acting from the stars is surprisingly stilted — but they get better as the series progresses, and later episodes are often as thoughtful as they are action-oriented.

Guests this first season include Ida Lupino, Inger Stevens, Jack Warden, James Coburn, Jack Lord, Buddy Ebsen, Jack Carson.

Extras: full frame, 32 episodes, alternate "singing" pilot finale, 1953 b/w "Fireside Theater" episode ("the genesis of 'Bonanza' "), featurettes, promos, ad spots, photo galleries, trailers (also available in separate volumes, $39.98 each)
