CROSS COUNTRY: Battling warm weather at the University of California at Riverside Invitational, the BYU cross country teams competed with 30 other schools as the men's team rose victorious while the women came in second place overall.
In the men's 8K event, BYU sophomore Miles Batty came in first place in a field of 343 runners with a time of 23 minutes, 41.1 seconds, shattering a course record to lead the team to its second consecutive victory and his second individual victory of the season. Senior Brandon Hebbert (24:00) came in fourth place, followed by Nate Ogden (24:05), Ryan Merriman (24:11) and Alden Bahr (24:15).
The women's team fought to a second-place finish with 98 points in their 5K race as the Cougars fell just behind host UC Riverside, who won the event with 89 points. BYU was led by junior Cecily Lemmon-Lew, who came in second place overall with a time of 16:32 behind Azusa Pacific's Jacky Kipwambok (16:29). Both marks were new course records.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: McCall Jones claimed both the singles and doubles title Saturday at the BYU Invitational. In both matches, she faced fellow BYU players as the Cougars started the fall season with dominant performances.
The sophomore defeated teammate Kristina Doerr in singles to clinch her second consecutive singles championship at the tournament. Jones seemed unstoppable as she won the first set 6-2 but veteran Doerr brought big game to the second set and took it 7-6. The two Cougars looked equally strong in the third, but Jones eventually pulled away to earn a 6-3 score line and her second championship.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Senior Kayla Walker led the BYU Cougars (6-6, 2-0) into their second Mountain West Conference match of the season Saturday against the Air Force Falcons (8-6, 0-2) in Provo. The Cougars won the match 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-11).
Match-leaders for the Cougars included Walker with 10 kills hitting at .353 and Christina Measom with nine kills, hitting at .471. Camilla Phillips had significant playing time for the Cougars, posting a career-high six kills, hitting at .364. Morgan Lloyd Sorensen added 11 digs.
The Cougars (6-6, 2-0) next play rival Utah (8-5, 2-0). The match will take place in Salt Lake City on Friday at 7 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: At Tucson, Ariz., after a scoreless 85 minutes of play on Saturday, No. 18 BYU found its winning goal with only five minutes left in a 1-0 victory over Arizona.
Senior Kassidy Christensen-Shumway entered the game in the second half and found the back of the net with five minutes left to play. A pass from teammate Carlee Payne put the ball in Shumway's possession right in front of the net where she was able to get it past the Arizona goalie. Payne now leads the team with three assists this season.
This is BYU's third shutout win of the season. Sophomore goalie McKinzie Olson has now played every minute of every game for the Cougars this year.
The Cougars (6-2-1) are now on a three-game winning streak as they return home next week to play at South Field on Wednesday against Southern Utah and Saturday against Utah State.
