An off-duty, plainclothes Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy shot a man who was fighting with other people at Green Street Social Club early Saturday morning.
About 1:30 a.m., a man in his late 20s was involved in a fight with several people at the club, 602 E. 500 South, Salt Lake Police detective Dennis McGowan said.
The unidentified off-duty sheriff's deputy fired one shot. McGowan did not know how the deputy got involved in the fight.
The bullet struck the man in the torso. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The injury is not considered life-threatening, police said.
Several people involved in the fight were injured. A second man was taken to the hospital, also in stable condition, McGowan said.
"(The deputy) was there for a family party," McGowan said. "He was with a group of people. … It was unclear how the fight started."
The Salt Lake City police department will investigate the matter. The county has placed the officer on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
