HARDBACKS

"PILGRIMS: A Wobegon Romance," by Garrison Keillor, Viking, $25.95 (f)

Margie Krebsbach wants to take a trip to Rome with her husband, Carl, and she finds a patriotic purpose for the journey. A Lake Wobegon boy died in the liberation of Rome in 1944, and his grave, according to his elderly brother, is in a neglected weed patch near the Colosseum. Along with a group of 10 enthusiastic neighbors, Margie and Carl embark on an adventure that teaches them the secret joy of travel.

"THOMAS CROMWELL: The Rise and Fall of Henry VIII's Most Notorious Minister," by Robert Hutchinson, Thomas Dunne Books, 368 pages, $29.99 (nf)

Hutchinson sets out to prove that fact can be more interesting than fiction. He tells the life story of Thomas Cromwell, son of a brewer, who became the Earl of Essex, Vice-Regent and High Chamberlain of England, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Cromwell's main goal was to aid King Henry VIII with all his plans. Cromwell's journey to power and wealth made his fall more spectacular. He died a traitor's death, beheaded outside the Tower of London with his head placed on a spike above the London Bridge.
