NORTH SALT LAKE — By early 2010, residents of North Salt Lake can expect to receive a can dedicated for recyclable materials.
After holding two public hearings, the North Salt Lake City Council has decided to create an optional recycling program for residents.
Details are still being worked out, said City Manager Collin Wood. But in October, the City Council will decide to give residents either a 30-day or a 60-day time frame to tell the city whether they want to participate in the program. A 30-day opt-out period could mean that cans could be on the ground as soon as January.
"The feedback from most people is 'Let's go ahead and do it,' " Wood said.
North Salt Lake will be the fifth city in Davis County to offer curbside recycling to residents. Woods Cross and Bountiful started mandatory programs. They were followed by Centerville, which started its opt-out program Sept. 1, and Farmington, which will operate a similar program beginning in November or December.
To remain viable, North Salt Lake's program needs to have at least 50 percent participation from the city's 3,500 households, Wood said. North Salt Lake is also allowing new residents to the city to choose whether to join the recycling program.
