Hike of the week: White Pine Lake — Cache County

From Tony Grove parking area, start hiking on the trail for White Pine Lake. The trail climbs gently in a large meadow. At 0.24 miles you come to a trail junction. Go right for White Pine Lake. You continue in the meadow, briefly enter conifers and come to a junction at 0.87 miles into the hike. Go right. The trail climbs up the hillside and empties into the next large meadow. The smooth trail continues in and out of meadows and comes to a small stream at 1.4 miles. After the stream, the trail goes up and over the hillside to the last large meadow before the summit. At 2.2 miles you leave the meadow for a large aspen grove. Leaving the aspens the trail comes to its highest point and opens with a beautiful view of Mount Gog at the summit. From the summit the trail switchbacks down through the conifers to White Pine Creek. A footbridge takes you over the creek at 3.3 miles, and you come to a trail junction. Go left. Like a hidden jewel, the lake reveals itself at the end of the trail. The lake sits between Mount Magog and Mount Gog with beautiful cliffs between the two. Relax on the bank and watch for trout jumping!

Directions: In Logan, take U.S. 89 up Logan Canyon. Drive 20 miles up the canyon to the turnoff for Tony Grove. From the turnoff, it's seven miles to the parking area and trailhead.
