The fact "The Star-Spangled Banner" appears in the LDS hymn book shows the reverence that members of the church have for it.

When they sing the song in church, they sing all the verses — with a little extra mustard on the words in the third verse: "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.' "

For Mormons, the song is more than an anthem. It's a hymn.

So when it was announced at a recent Los Angeles Angels game that jazz musician Kenny G would be doing his own instrumental version of the anthem before the game, I hunkered down for one more over-the-top rendition filled with licks and riffs.

I was completely off-base.
