Hikers located in Adams Canyon

Two separate groups of missing hikers were found Monday night by Davis County Search and Rescue teams.

Davis County Sheriff's Capt. Kenny Payne said the first group, consisting of two men, was coming down Adams Canyon in Layton when 24-year-old Jesse Rampton became too exhausted to go on around 5:30 p.m. The second man, 35-year-old Justin Nielsen left Rampton to go get help.

Payne said Rampton was able to contact emergency crews by cell phone, and rescue teams reached him above the Adams Canyon waterfall and gave him thermal blankets, shelter, and provisions. A helicopter was unable to reach Rampton due to weather, darkness, and terrain, but Payne said rescue teams will monitor him overnight and will attempt a helicopter rescue in the morning.

Payne said Rampton is extremely hypothermic and if his condition worsens crews will attempt a technical rope rescue. "Right now it's too risky to do that, both for him and for the crews. The best option right now is to stay put," Payne said.

Nielsen was also found by search and rescue teams.

The second group lost was identified as a husband and wife hiking near Thurston Peak.

Payne said the couple became disoriented in low storm clouds and called for help by cell phone around 5:30 p.m. Search and rescue crews told the couple to hike to the next peak over and were picked up by rescue teams within about two hours.
