BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The state Department of Fish and Game plans to remove hybrid fish populations and reintroduce pure Yellowstone cutthroat trout in south-central Idaho waterways at the end of the month.

The agency says the restoration effort at Sixmile Creek and Gunnel Reservoir in Cassia County is part of a plan approved by the state Fish and Game Commission to conserve Yellowstone cutthroat trout populations in Idaho.

The project is scheduled to begin at the end of September.

Doug Megargle, a regional fisheries manager for the department, says there is a limited number of pure Yellowstone cutthroat trout in the Magic Valley and expanding the population is a preventative measure.

The state plans to allow the public to harvest the existing fish for the next two weeks before they are removed.
