FC Dallas scores 6 in routing Galaxy; Sounders win
CARSON, Calif. — Jeff Cunningham had two goals and two assists to lead FC Dallas to a 6-3 rout of the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.
FC Dallas (7-11-6) broke a three-game winless streak and denied the Galaxy (9-5-11) a chance to move into first place in Western Conference. Los Angeles, which entered the match with a 306-minute shutout streak, remained two points behind Houston.
Cunningham and Dax McCarty combined to break a 2-all tie in the 71st minute. Cunningham beat defender Gregg Berhalter along the left side before passing to McCarty, who scored from 4 yards.
Dallas then scored three goals in a four-minute span to put the game away. Atiba Harris converted a 4-yard header in the 82nd minute, and Cunningham passed to David Ferreira for an 8-yard shot a minute later.
Cunningham then scored his 12th goal of the season and the 116th of his MLS career on a 19-yard shot inside the left post in the 86th minute.
Dallas took a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. Dave van den Bergh converted a 21-yard free kick in the eighth minute, before Cunningham scored off Harris' right-wing cross from 13 yards inside the right post in the 25th minute.
The Galaxy narrowed the deficit to 2-1 in the 26th minute on an own goal from Dallas defender Jair Benitez. They tied the match at 2 in the 42nd minute when A.J. De La Garza scored his first MLS goal.
SOUNDERS 2, D.C. UNITED 1: At Washington, Fredy Montero scored his 11th goal in the 84th minute and the Seattle Sounders earned three points. James Riley lobbed the ball just inside the box to Montero, who hooked a shot with his right foot to the top right corner of the goal past Josh Wicks. The expansion Sounders (9-6-10) won for just the second time in their last eight outings. United (8-6-12) still leads a seven-team race for four wild-card spots after their first home loss since a 3-0 defeat to Chivas USA on Oct. 4, 2008. The clubs in contention are separated by only four points.
TORONTO FC 3, RAPIDS 2: At Toronto, rookie O'Brian White and defender Nana Attakora scored three minutes apart in the second half to help Toronto FC snap a three-game winless streak. Dwayne De Rosario's goal in the 19th minute ended a 313-minute scoreless drought for Toronto FC (9-9-7), which had gone 0-2-1 without scoring since a 2-0 win over D.C. United on Aug. 15. Four minutes after the half, Conor Casey tied it for Colorado with his league-leading 13th goal of the season. But White replaced Ali Gerba in the 65th minute and took just six minutes to score for Toronto, flicking a through ball from De Rosario over charging goalkeeper Preston Burpo and into the back of the net.
WIZARDS 1, RED BULLS 0: At East Rutherford, N.J., Josh Wolff scored his ninth goal of the season early in the first half and Kevin Hartman got his sixth shutout of the season. It was Kansas City's first win in the Meadowlands since they knocked off the MetroStars franchise on April 19, 2000. Hartman's shutout was an MLS-record 83rd of his career.
