More than a year and a half before the 2009 Milwaukee Wisconsin South Stake youth conference activity took place this June, organizers began planning to make it a reality.
More important for the event, a handcart trek re-enactment would be the construction of handcarts — built as close to the pioneer models as possible.
Ray Grams, stake Young Men President, asked a neighbor for help. The neighbor recommended Melvin Graber, an Amish wagon builder.
Graber — who had visited Utah and purchased a book on handcarts — immediately accepted the challenge.
