A Labor Day tradition turned tragic Saturday when a trailer ran over and killed a 5-year-old Layton boy, police said.
Kai Korgensen was pulled under the tires on the trailer when his mother, who was seated on the trailer, attempted to lower him to the ground as the trailer came to a stop just after 9:30 p.m., according to a Davis County Sheriff's Office press release. He and his family had been participating in a long-running tradition of taking a hay ride through Farmington Bay Bird Refuge, near 1325 West and 925 South.
Sgt. Scott Harper said about 40-45 people have gathered for the ride for the past 40 years. A flat-bed trailer is loaded with hay bales and blankets and travels up and down the bird refuge road.
"He died there at the scene," Harper said. "Numerous individuals witnessed the accident, including his mom and dad and two siblings."
Harper said no charges are expected to be filed in relation to the accident.
