High school football: Park City gets back on track with win over Delta

DELTA — Throughout this week, the Park City Miners had to deal with the fact they let top-ranked Juan Diego off the hook last week.

Park City led Juan Diego 14-7 at halftime and 14-10 at the end of the third quarter, only to see the Soaring Eagle reel off 21 unanswered points over the final quarter to win going away.

To say the last, it left a bad, bad taste in the mouths of Park City's players.

Accordingly, they wanted to get that bad taste out of their mouths ASAP, and they did so in a big way on the road to one of Class 3A's traditional powerhouses.

Behind a stellar performance by Park City's offensive line, fullback Dylan Chynoweth exploded for 245 rushing yards and three TDs, QB Erik Walker added 128 rushing yards and three TDs (one through the air and two on the ground) and this time, the Miners finished with a flourish en route to a convincing 41-17 win over Delta on Friday.

"We felt like last week we didn't finish against Juan Diego, so that was our big goal this week — to go out there and finish the game because we know we're good enough to put up points like this against any team," said Chynoweth. "It's all about finishing for us."

The Miners most definitely finished on Friday to overcome the grit and determination of Delta.

Leading 20-3 at halftime, Park City gave up touchdowns to Delta on consecutive drives to start the third quarter.

The Miners didn't blink, however, as Walker responded with a 64-yard TD run after the first Delta score and Chynoweth responded with an 80-yard TD run after the second Delta score.

From there, Park City's defense got back-to-back stops, and the Miners added a late 27-yard TD pass from Walker to Alex Molinaro to seal Friday's win.

Both Walker and Chynoweth were explosive on offense, doing the kind of things that they're expected to do and making the kinds of plays that make them two of the top players in all of 3A.

In particular, though, Park City coach Brandon Matich was pleased with Chynoweth, who scored a 78-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage and was stellar throughout.

"It was good to see Dylan have a breakout game," said Matich. "Dylan has been a little frustrated the first two games that he hasn't been the Dylan of old, but we saw the Dylan of old tonight. He ran hard, he ran with violence."
