I wept for Cory J. Jenkins and Kurt Curtiss and their families this last week as they become the latest heroes from Utah to give their lives for our country. Recently, as I looked at the Vietnam Wall, I felt great sadness and loss as I searched for the name of Mike Hughes, who graduated from Jordan High in 1962. He was a super kid and a great athlete. Given the chance, he would have made a great husband and father. He, like many others, died as heroes.
Now, nearly 50 years later, we know they all died for nothing except pride and bravery. I have no doubt that 50 years from now, we will look back on our current war — now in its eighth year — and have nothing to show for our losses. Nothing that we do will make one iota of change in the Islamic countries.
