WEST VALLEY CITY — A man suspected of abusing a 7-year-old boy in the restroom of a fast-food restaurant was booked into jail Friday.
Jorge Denis Gutierrez-Ortiz, 44, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of child kidnapping, sodomy on a child and an immigration detainer.
Gutierrez was booked hours after surveillance video of him appeared on local newscasts. Police received numerous calls from viewers saying they recognized the man. A lead from one anonymous tipster turned out to be accurate, according to police.
Gutierrez is accused of walking into Burger King, at 3500 South and 5600 West, on Aug. 15, and sexually assaulting a 7-year-old boy. Investigators believe Gutierrez likely waited in the restroom for the right opportunity. The boy's mother was at the counter ordering food when her son left to use the restroom.
After the attack, Gutierrez walked out of the restaurant and through a nearby grocery store where he was filmed by a surveillance camera, police said.
Gutierrez was being held Friday without bail. The investigation into whether he had victimized anyone else was ongoing, police said.
