Here are some books that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACKS

"PART OF THE PRIDE: My Life Among the Big Cats of Africa," by Kevin Richardson with Tony Park, St. Martin's Press, $25.99 (nf)

Kevin Richardson has posted his interactions with adult lions in South Africa on YouTube. While working with lions, as well as hyenas and other predators, at two South African animal parks, he broke every taboo about working with these animals. He uses love, understanding and trust to develop personal bonds with them. This book is about his life with the lions and shows how he understood the minds of these big cats so he could become part of their pride.

"LADIES OF THE LAKE," by Haywood Smith, St. Martin's Press, $24.99 (f)

Sisters Dahlia, Iris, Violet and Rose have a complicated relationship. When their grandmother dies, her will states that the family home is theirs to sell and split the profits, if they spend the whole summer — without family or friends — at her run-down lodge on remote Lake Clare. As tempers flare and old secrets are revealed, four grown women discover that the past is never truly forgotten.
