Midvale and neighboring Taylorsville may join the ranks of cities nationwide that are allowing backyard hens.
Both cities are considering ordinances that would allow the urban chickens if residents meet strict rules regarding setbacks, waste disposal and other issues.
In Taylorsville, the issue is still at the planning commission stage, while in Midvale, the City Council is considering an ordinance allowing hens.
Midvale staffers used the Internet and personal experience to craft the new rules.
Dubious of hens at first, Midvale Councilwoman Colleen Costello was won over to the pro-chicken side after hearing the strict rules and regulations that would accompany backyard fowl.
In Midvale, roosters won't be allowed, according to a staff report to the council. Slaughtering of hens would also be forbidden.
The Midvale Council is set to consider approval of the ordinance later this month.
