The gospel in words: 'Love'
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son." (John 3:16)
"Husbands, love your wives." (Ephesians 5:25)
In Greek, there are four words or concepts generally translated into English using the single word "love." These "four loves" have very different meanings. C.S. Lewis wrote a wonderful book called "The Four Loves" in which he examines each of the definitions of love.
Briefly, the four loves are first, affection (Greek: storge). This is the type of fondness that results in familiarity, particularly among family members but also among people thrown together by circumstances. It sometimes describes our affectionate feelings for pets.
