BYU scholar Robert J. Matthews dies

PROVO, Utah — Robert J. Matthews, former dean of Religious Education at BYU, died Sunday, Aug. 30, at about 3 p.m. of complications following open-heart surgery.

Matthews joined BYU's ancient scripture faculty in 1971. He spent 17 years as either department chairman or dean of religious education. He received the BYU Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Commitment to Adult Students. He earned his bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate from BYU.

He worked on the committee to publish a new LDS edition of the King James Version of the Bible in 1979. The LDS edition included excerpts from the Joseph Smith Translation in the footnotes. Matthews also made major contributions to the Bible Dictionary included in the LDS edition of the Bible.
