Salt Lake Bees: Big 8th inning

COLORADO SPRINGS ?— Tommy Mendoza tossed 62?3 innings and his teammates banged out 16 hits, and the Salt Lake Bees routed the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 14-2 on Saturday night.

Mendoza (1-0) earned his first career Triple-A win, as he allowed just one hit, although he did walk five with two strikeouts. The Bees led 2-0 when they took command with a four-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a two-run single by Reggie Willits.

The Bees broke the game open with an eight-run eighth inning, as they sent 13 batters to the plate. Jason Giambi spoiled the Bees' shutout bid with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. All nine batters in the Salt Lake lineup drove in at least one run with Bobby Wilson, Freddy Sandoval and Willits leading the way with two each. Wilson topped the Bees with his first four hit game of the season. Terry Evans and Matt Brown chipped in three hits each, as Salt Lake has now taken three straight games at Colorado Springs.

BEESWAX: Shane Loux was sent back to the Bees. Salt Lake also reassigned left-handed pitcher Robert Fish to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
