Injuries claim man hit by FrontRunner

A 57-year-old man hit by a FrontRunner train Thursday night has died as a result of his injuries.

Heliadro Salgado was riding his bicycle near the Utah Transit Authority's Salt Lake Central Station, 200 South and 600 West, when he stopped momentarily at the tracks where the crossing arms were down and then tried to cross, said UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter.

The train, which was backing into the station, hit Salgado and pinned him and his bicycle under an 8,500-pound cab car, Carpentere said. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 9:20 p.m.

"We want to express our deepest sympathies to the family. This is a tragedy," Carpenter said. "Also, it's a reminder to be safe around crossings. Those signals are there for your protection. You need to respect those like any traffic signal."

That intersection is particularly dangerous because it has four tracks, two for FrontRunner and two for freight trains, he said.
