COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ?— Jason Giambi's fifth-inning RBI single snapped a 1-1 tie and sent the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on their way to a 6-2 win over the Salt Lake Bees on Wednesday night.
Paul Phillips started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second when Sean O'Sullivan walked Mike McCoy. One out later, Giambi, who signed a minor-league contract with the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, lined a base hit to right field to bring home Phillips with the go-ahead run. The Sky Sox made it 3-1 on back-to-back doubles in the sixth by Kenny Perez and Pocatello's Christian Colonel and broke the game open with three more runs in the eighth.
O'Sullivan (6-4), who was making his first start for the Bees since his July 28 no-hitter at Sacramento, took the loss, as he allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
Sean Rodriguez drove in both Salt Lake runs with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning and a solo home run in the ninth. Terry Evans had two hits, including a triple, as the Bees have now dropped three consecutive games. Colorado Springs' magic number for eliminating Salt Lake from the division race is down to six.
