Don't expect a formal announcement about a starting quarterback.
Utah football fans will likely just have to wait and see if it's Terrance Cain or Jordan Wynn when the Utes face Utah State at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Sept. 3.
"Why tip your hand when you don't have to?" said head coach Kyle Whittingham. "It makes no sense."
The decision, he added, likely won't be unveiled until kickoff.
In the meantime, the battle continues.
"The quarterback competition is going good," Whittingham said. "We're getting closer to being ready to name the guy. We'll see."
Although it appeared Cain was getting more reps with the No. 1 offense late in Tuesday's practice, the competition is still ongoing.
"It hasn't been decided. You've got to keep working," Cain said. "That's all we are trying to do, keep working."
Making his reps count is what motivates Cain, who vows he isn't taking anything for granted.
"I'm just doing what I can for the team," he said. "I haven't been declared the starter yet. So that's how I'm going to look at it."
Wynn is taking a similar approach.
"No starter has been named. So, obviously, I still have a chance. I'm going to compete," he said. "And, like I've said, we're just both going to push each other and just get ready for Utah State."
MOVING OVER: With a couple of injuries on the offensive line, center Zane Taylor took reps at guard on Tuesday. Tyler Williams handled the snapping duties.
"They kind of need me to move around a little bit," said Taylor, who took a lot of reps at guard during spring ball.
EXTRA POINTS: Starting left guard Caleb Schlauderaff injured his knee Tuesday. The severity was not immediately known. Whittingham said the junior will be re-evaluated this morning. ... Right guard Walter Watts had a scope on his injured knee, but he could resume practice soon. ... Wide receiver David Reed was sidelined at Tuesday's practice after having the wind knocked out of him. ... Right guard Tevita Stevens is out with the flu. ... Left tackle Zane Beadles is going to write a daily diary for "Sporting News Today," an online digital newspaper.
