Intoxicated driver asks Orem police to jail him
OREM — Most people don't ask to be arrested.
But Orem police say one intoxicated man told an officer to take him to jail because "he knew he was too drunk," said Orem Police Lt. Gary Downey.
Friday morning at about 3 a.m., the officer noticed a man asleep in a car, which was running and in park, near 1700 S. Village Lane.
Downey said the officer was finally able to wake the 22-year-old man, who appeared to be intoxicated.
The man admitted he had been drinking and refused to do the field sobriety tests. Instead, he suggested the officer simply take him to jail because he was just too drunk, Downey said.
The man was taken to the Orem holding facility for investigation of DUI.
In a second incident that occurred Thursday afternoon, officers got a call of an intoxicated driver at 737 N. 1200 West, Downey said. The caller said the man had fallen when he stepped out of his car, then stumbled around as he tried to change a tire.
The man, 21, failed field sobriety tests and began fighting with officers after he was arrested, damaging the officer's patrol car, Downey said.
Officers found two empty bottles of rum and a small amount of marijuana in his car, and booked him into Utah County Jail for investigation of DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, an open container of alcohol, assault on a peace officer and damage to a jail.
