Eight young musicians from Logan to Provo were selected through auditions Tuesday to participate in this year's Salute to Youth concert.

They are:

Sara Noel Bauman, 16, violin, Salt Lake City

 Trenton Chang, 11, piano, Logan

 Verina Chen, 15, piano, Provo

Christian Hales, 16, bass, Salt Lake City

 Camille Johnson, 17, marimba, Farmington

Ubeeng Kueq, 16, piano, Salt Lake City

 Aubree Oliverson, 11, violin, Orem

 Gabriella Roderer, 18, flute, Wellsville

The eight finalists will play with the Utah Symphony at the Salute to Youth concert in Abravanel Hall on Sept. 29. Associate conductor David Cho will conduct.

Three other auditioners received honorable mention Tuesday: Joseph Chang, piano; Elizabeth Anne White, harp; and Rebekah Willey, violin.

A total of 40 young artists from around the state took part in the auditions, which were held on the stage of Abravanel Hall. Judging them were Kory Katseanes, director of orchestras at BYU; Paul Pollei, founder and director of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition; and Utah Symphony members Yuki MacQueen, violin, and Nick Norton, trumpet.

This year the Salute to Youth concert, which is sponsored by the Deseret News, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In that time, hundreds of youngsters have soloed with the Utah Symphony.

Many have gone on to careers in music as soloists, orchestral players and teachers.

Tickets for the Salute to Youth concert are now available by phone at 801-355-2787 or 888-451-2787; online at utahsymphony.org; and in person through all ArtTix outlets.
