LEHI — West Jordan's Herb Lyons made it a double sweep Friday at the Utah Golf Association Mid-Am and Masters Championship at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club.

With an incredible second-round 3-under 69 in the 54-hole event, and then a fast start in the final round, Lyons finished at 3-over par to edge defending champion Clay Bingham by two strokes. Bingham, from Spanish Fork, began the final round leading by two but had two triple bogeys. Lyons, on the other hand, came out of the gate in his final round with two straight birdies. Lyons not only won the Mid-Am for those 25 or older, but also won the Masters competition for those age 40 and older.

Finishing third was Provo's Darrin Overson at 7-over par; Paul Cannon finished alone in fifth at 8-over par; and Steve Poulsen and Bill Probst tied for fifth at 9-over par.

High winds and lightning made playing conditions difficult, suspending Thursday's second round until Friday morning. In that tough second round, only 13 of 62 players shot under 80. There were a total of 23 scores at 90 or higher, and six rounds at 100 or higher.
