Student style: What the experts say
While those who grew up in the '80s may cringe to hear styles from that era have made a resurgence, fashion experts are loving the trend.
It's something that gives students a variety of clothing choices, said Dana Walker, southwest fashion manager for Nordstrom. Plus, the styles are a little more subdued than the looks from the '80s.
"They're still keeping it very pulled together, but experimenting with plaids, or mixing patterned leggings with iconic images," Walker said.
Other trends include skipping on the skinny look altogether and choosing baggier, "boyfriend" style clothing such as what actress Katie Holmes has been seen wearing, according to Walker.
Along with the '80s-inspired looks, accessories are also a big deal this year, said David Hacker, vice president of trend and color at Kohl's Department Stores. Must-have items for girls include bright scarves and jewelry made with wood, stone or leather.
"Accessories are a great way to wear the current trends of the season without having to spend a lot of money," said Hacker.
As for younger students, fashion is all about versatility and comfort, according to Michele Casper with Lands' End. Top styles for girls include long and short-sleeve T-shirts and knit tops, tie-dye fabrics and also leggings.
Styles for boys include hoodies and cargo pants and also colors such as browns, oranges and grays that are inspired by nature, said Casper.
"The major trend this year is that kids want to make sure they have their own sense of style," said Casper. "And even with a limited budget, kids can take things and make them their own, either by how they mix and match, how they wear them, or if they customize them."
