S.L. among top 10 housing vacancy cities

Utah's capital city is among the top 10 cities nationwide where housing vacancies are growing the fastest, according to a report released Tuesday.

The Forbes.com report ranked the Salt Lake metro area ninth among the 75 largest metropolitan areas across the country.

Forbes looked at vacancy data from America's 75 largest metropolitan statistical areas and metropolitan divisions — geographic entities defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget for use by federal agencies in collecting, tabulating and publishing federal statistics.

The rankings were a combination of rental and homeowner vacancy fluctuation rates for the 75 largest metros and were based on year-over-year changes in the first quarter from the U.S. Census Bureau. Each metro was ranked on the year-over-year change in rental vacancy and homeowner vacancy rates; the final ranking was an average of the two.

Salt Lake City's homeowner vacancy rank was 56 of 75, while the rental vacancy rank was 61 of 75, according to the report.

The metro area at the top of the list for highest rising vacancies was Kansas City, Mo.
