U.S. House OKs Orton library bill
The U.S. House has approved a bill named in honor of late Utah Rep. Bill Orton.
The bill, which would boost funding to the Law Library of Congress, was approved Thursday.
Orton, a Democrat who represented Utah's 3rd Congressional District for six years in the 1990s, died in April in an ATV accident. He was 60.
The measure passed the House 383-44. It now moves to the Senate.
The proposal would change the name from the Law Library of Congress to the National Law Library and would provide $3.5 million to help reduce a backlog in books that haven't been cataloged.
It would also create the William Orton Program to solicit outside donations and create partnerships between the library and groups such as the American Bar Association.
