Centennial celebrations are planned later this month for Rainbow Bridge National Monument in southern Utah.

The visitor center at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Page, Ariz., will host presentations on the monument Aug. 12-15.

Events include speakers, gourd painting, rug weaving, tribal histories and presentations on the cultural significance of Rainbow Bridge.

Although known to American Indian tribes for generations, the bridge was discovered by European descendants in August 1909 and declared a national monument 10 months later.

Additional commemorative events are scheduled before the monument's 100th birthday in May 2010.
