Long races to fastest qualifying
TOOELE — Patrick Long already has one victory under his belt at Miller Motorsports Park this season. If his performance in practice sessions for Saturday's NASCAR Camping World Series West race serves as any indication, Long could soon be adding to his championship trophy tally.
Long carved out the fastest times in both hourlong practice sessions on Friday. He posted a time of 1:57.912 and a speed of 93.426 mph in his first lap. His second lap proved to be even better. His time improved to 1:56.101 and his speed went up to 94.883 mph.
Although he is making his third appearance in the NASCAR Camping World Series West this season, Long is more well-known for competing in the American Le Mans Series. He had a successful outing when he came to Tooele for the Utah Grand Prix in May, emerging as the winner in the GT2 class.
Two-time series champion Eric Holmes, who is also the defending champ, posted the second-fastest time behind Long with a 1:56.902 lap.
The race will continue today with pole position qualifying at 10 a.m. and the main 125-mile event scheduled to drop the green flag at 1:30 p.m.
