On July 26th, the Deseret News introduced its editorial with the headline "Vote for new public-safety complex." The editorial convincingly explains the need for a new facility, and it assumes that the new police and fire-department headquarters will be built on the east side of 300 East between 400 South and 500 South.
While that is Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker's currently preferred location, it is not the most appropriate place.
An objective consideration of downtown Salt Lake City's geography points to the vacant space on the northeast corner of the intersection of 500 South and Main Street as the ideal location. It is next door to the Matheson Courthouse and within sight of the federal courthouse.
