Capri Sun Sunrise Juice Drink Blend. Orange Wake-Up, Berry Tangerine Morning and Tropical Morning; $2.49 per box of 10 6.75-ounce pouches.
Bonnie: Capri Sun Sunrise is hoping that moms will serve this new calcium- and vitamin C-fortified beverage to their kids for breakfast. I'm hoping they'll serve orange juice and milk instead.
According to the USDA, only 30 percent of boys and 10 percent of girls are getting adequate amounts of calcium. Capri Sun Sunrise contains 100 percent of the daily value of vitamin C and 20 percent of calcium, and is free of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. But — and this is a huge "but" — these are basically just fortified sugar water with a smidgen of added juice concentrates, equaling only 10 percent juice.
I'd suggest serving naturally calcium-rich milk and naturally vitamin C-rich 100 percent orange juice (preferably a brand fortified with calcium) instead.
Carolyn: About five years ago, Kraft came out with Crystal Light Sunrise, a breakfast drink with most of the vitamin C and thick texture of orange juice but almost none of its calories. I've been buying it and Crystal Light Sunrise Ruby Red Grapefruit ever since.
Capri Sun Sunrise is sort of Kraft's kid version of the same idea — i.e., that people should be drinking Kraft pseudo-juices all day, including the morning. As with Crystal Light Sunrise, Capri Sun contains 100 percent of the day's recommended supply of vitamin C. Unlike the Crystal Light, Capri Sun Sunrise comes premade in single-serve pouches rather than as a powder, so the drink can just be plopped down in front of a kid — a real plus on a busy morning.
In fact, these would appear to be a relaunch of Kraft's late-'90s Tang breakfast drink pouches for this more-natural era.
Claim Jumper Restaurant Frozen Entrees. Cheese Ravioli Parmigiana, Chicken Marsala, Chicken and Penne a la Vodka, Shrimp Scampi, and Chicken and Shrimp Penne Rustica; $3.29 to $4.49 per 12-ounce to 17-ounce entree.
Bonnie: I generally don't frequent family-style restaurants serving generous portions of comfort food, like the Western United States' Claim Jumper chain that's behind these new frozen entrees.
