Bloggernacle Back Bench: Should missionaries blog?

Published: Tuesday, July 28 2009 12:17 a.m. MDT

Last year I asked, \"Should missionaries blog?\" I exclaimed \"Yes\" and then proceeded to provide a

list of pros and cons about how missionaries could use blogs to keep in

touch with families,  but warned to be aware of privacy issues. In this latest installment, I have additional caveats and I again use Dr. B's Mormon Missionary

Blog that recently provided

\"A Bit of Advice on Missionary Blogs\" to look at whether or not missionaries should blog.

Missionary

blogs have grown since I last posted on the subject. \"About four months ago, there were about 50 missionary blogs with

about six mission president blogs,\" Dr. B said. \"Today, that number has increased to

well over 200 missionary blogs with about 20 mission

presidents blogging. There are probably dozens more, but I haven't

located them yet.\" I expect this to continue to grow as

missionaries, mission presidents and families with missionaries

continue to use blogging to both share mission experiences and spread

missionary work.

However,

as Dr. B found out, you may want to check with the mission president

before starting up a blog. One mission president found out that the

mission was being publicly blogged about and decided to contact all the

families to tell them \"to cease and desist from public blogging.\" As

a missionary, you should ask if you can do a blog. And if you are the

family of a missionary, Dr. B suggests that you have your missionary report

to their mission president that their family is sharing their emails on

a blog.Dr. B also said to be sensitive and careful with any information posted on the blog.\"While there is no definite policy for or against families
