Gay-rights petition gets 1,360 signees
A petition that asks the LDS Church to reconsider its policies and political activism related to gay rights has gathered more than 1,360 signatures since it began circulating in June.
The Committee for Reconciliation plans to deliver the petition to leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in November. The petition is posted on the Web site LDSapology.org.
Organizer Cheryl Nunn, of Santa Cruz, Calif., on Friday said the petition is a reaction to the Utah-based church's involvement in Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in California. It also seeks an apology for church policies and practices that some believe have marginalized or hurt gay Mormons.
