Forest Service encourages clean campsites

The U.S. Forest Service is urging Utahns to keep campsites clean and tidy to ward off bears and other unwanted guests from skunks to raccoons.

Forest Service spokeswoman Kathy Jo Pollack says animals frequent campgrounds for leftover and discarded food. Officials recommend securing coolers at night, keeping food out of tents, washing dishes and keeping grease and leftovers out of fire pits.

They also suggest using non-scented sunscreen or insect repellent.

Other safe-camping tips include building campfires away from overhanging tree branches, dry grass or leaves.
