Pa. teens trek re-creates ancestors' journey

Early July 23, about 100 teenagers from around Pittsburgh packed up their bonnets and straw hats -- yes, bonnets and straw hats -- and headed four hours south to the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, where they will begin a three-day wilderness journey toward a connection with their religious forebears.

Known within the modern-day Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints simply as "the trek," these Latter-day Saints, or LDS, youth will re-create some key aspects of the journey made during the 1800s by more than 70,000 Mormon believers who moved their homes to the Salt Lake Valley of Utah to escape religious intolerance and persecution.
