A 26-year-old Salt Lake City woman was hospitalized after falling nearly 40 feet out of her apartment window Friday morning.
Police received a call at 9:42 a.m. that a woman had fallen from the sixth floor of the American Towers apartment building at 48 W. Broadway to the flat roof jutting out of the third floor, said Salt Lake Fire spokesman Scott Freitag.
Officials aren't sure why she fell; however, witnesses told police the woman frequently sat half-in, half-out of her window to smoke, and perhaps she slipped or lost her balance, Freitag said.
Emergency crews were able to reach the initially unconscious woman through third-floor access and transported her to University Hospital as a trauma patient.
"It doesn't appear she has life-threatening injuries," Freitag said. "She's pretty lucky."
The woman didn't have any obvious broken bones, but because of the 40-foot fall, Freitag said they wanted to make sure she was OK.
