A piece in the July 16 Forum, "Too hot for nuke power," begs for comment. Mr. Ed Firmage Jr. implies that river water is the only way to cool nuclear plants. Surely he knows about cooling towers but has chosen, for his own reasons, not to mention them. The beauty of cooling towers is that heat rejection is not dependent upon river-water temperature. They are indexed to the wet bulb temperature of the surrounding (ambient) atmosphere.
Those who oppose nuclear power and coal-fired power never come up with anything to take their place that is even remotely practical. If we rule out nuclear power or coal in our future, we are aiding and abetting the acceleration of an energy crisis that our posterity will inherit.
