A Cedar Hills man has been charged with failing to pay taxes on hundreds of thousands of dollars earned between 2002 and 2007, the Utah State Tax Commission said Monday.
The state filed felony criminal charges against Gilbert McIff, including communication fraud and tax evasion, both second-degree felonies, and failing to file a proper tax return, a third-degree felony.
McIfff submitted fraudulent tax returns that stated he had not received any wages. According to the state Tax Commission, McIff's employer told investigators this was untrue.
McIff owes more than $56,000 in taxes, criminal penalty and interest, said Tax Commission spokesman Charlie Roberts.
"State income taxes are used to finance our education system," Roberts said. "Those who refuse to pay their fair share overburden compliant taxpayers."
