Former boxing champ Gatti found dead

SAO PAULO — Former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, whose epic trilogy with Micky Ward branded him one of the most exciting fighters of his generation, was found dead in a hotel room in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas early Saturday.

Police investigator Edilson Alves told The Associated Press that the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered in his room at the tourist resort, where Gatti had arrived on Friday with his Brazilian wife Amanda and 1-year-old son.

Alves said police were investigating and it was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died.

"It is still too early to say anything concrete, although it is all very strange," Alves said. He declined to provide any additional details.

A spokeswoman for the state public safety department said Gatti's wife and son were unhurt. The woman declined to give a name in keeping with department policy.

Lesnar takes heavyweight bout at UFC 100

LAS VEGAS — Brock Lesnar defended his heavyweight title in his uniquely brutish style at UFC 100 Saturday night, capping the sport's landmark weekend with a second-round stoppage of Frank Mir.

Georges St. Pierre defended his welterweight title with a showcase of his inimitably well-rounded mixed martial arts skills in an unanimous decision over Thiago Alves, while Dan Henderson knocked out Michael Bisping with a single punch in a middleweight upset as the UFC rolled its odometer into triple digits on a celebratory night for the proliferating sport.

Sturm beats Gevor in decision

NUERBURG, Germany — Felix Sturm retained his WBA middleweight title, beating Khoren Gevor in a unanimous decision Saturday at the Ring Arena.

Sturm relied on clean, strong shots that stunned Gevor several times throughout the 12-round fight. But the Armenian challenger was aggressive and tenacious, moving Sturm around the ring and keeping him in a defensive crouch.

Late goal salvages tie with Haiti

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Stuart Holden scored in the first minute of second-half injury time, giving the United States a 2-2 tie with Haiti on Saturday night in their final first-round game at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Americans, seeking their third straight title in the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, finished first in Group B and will play the third-place team in Group A or C next Saturday in Philadelphia. The United States (2-0-1), which already had clinched advancement, improved to 23-0-2 in Gold Cup group play.

Davy Arnaud put the United States ahead in the sixth minute, but Haiti stunned the Americans with goals in the first four minutes of the second half by Sirin Vaniel and Mones Chery.
