State Am's much more than golf for Stimpson

Like Stimpson, Jolley is in the quarterfinals for the first time and had only won one match ever, in last year's opening round, before Friday. Jolley disposed of 2003 champion Tommy Sharp 1 up and then beat co-medalist Ben Schilleman 3 and 2.
"I'm killing my driver, hitting it really well right now," Jolley said. "I'm playing well and I thought coming into this thing I had a good chance of winning."
Along with the two older golfers, the quarterfinals will include a pair of 18-year-olds, three 20-something guys and the defending champion, the 31-year-old Horner.
Blair is trying to repeat the feat of his father, Jimmy, who won the State Am as an 18-year-old the summer before attending BYU. Blair, who might be the fastest player on the planet, got past Conner Jones 2 and 1 in the morning, before outlasting 16-year-old Devon Purser by the same score in the afternoon.
Sutton, who didn't even take up golf until five years ago, beat Cedar City's Jeff Evans in a 19-hole match full of momentum swings.
Going into No. 16, Sutton was 1 up, only to see Evans roll in a 50-footer to tie the match and go ahead on No. 17 when Sutton three-putted. Then Evans hit his drive under a pine tree at No. 18 and Sutton tied the match. On the first extra hole, Evans hit it to within 15 feet, but Sutton rolled in a 25-footer to win the match when Evans missed.
Horner has gotten better as the tournament has progressed and he took care of former champion Darrin Overson 3 and 2 after surviving a 19-hole match against Tyler Weight in the morning when he blew a 5-hole lead.
Barton beat Scott Hailes 2 and 1 after Hailes had knocked off three-time champion Doug Bybee 2 and 1 in the morning.
Robbie Fillmore had an easy time with Rocky Schutjer 6 and 5, before hanging on to beat Kurt Owen 2 and 1.
Todd Francis, a 26-year-old who plays out of Jeremy Country Club, defeated 17-year-old McCoy Willey, a Dixie High junior, 1 up in a well-played match, sinking a four-foot putt on the final hole after Willey rolled in a 25-foot birdie.
The winner of the Horner-Sutton match will play the Stimpson-Barton winner this afternoon, while the Fillmore-Blair winner will take on the Jolley-Francis winner. Those two winners will pair off Sunday morning at 7:30 in a 36-hole final.
