Looking at the picture of former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Glap shaking hands was both encouraging and consummately sad. What the picture did not show were the bodies of the countless victims that those two were standing on. In McNamara's case, more than 50,000 young Americans. In Vo's case, almost 2 million of his countrymen. Old men politicize and young men die.
I suppose it is good that two old men can be friends after so many have suffered and died for their folly, mistakes and misguided ideals.
