Utah is eligible to receive $2.9 million in grants to fight against the novel H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that Utah could apply for the money in public health emergency response and hospital preparedness grants, which are part of $350 million available nationwide.

"With flu season around the corner, we must remain vigilant and do all we can to prepare our nation and protect public health," said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

The grants could increase the ability of hospitals and health care systems to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies.
