While you may think the book you've written is nearly perfect, it's important to remember most authors are rejected by multiple publishers before someone picks up their book, according to Sarah Burningham with HarperStudio in New York City.

Burningham advises writers to look for an agent to represent your book. Most large publishers won't accept manuscripts from authors representing themselves. Next, find a publisher who will be the best fit for your book.

One of the top resources for finding publishers and agents is Writer's Market, a reference book published annually with details on individual publishing houses and what types of books they sell.

Most local publishers do not require authors to have an agent. Still, Emily Watts with Deseret Book said it is important for an author to find a publisher that best fits their book, and Writer's Market can help with that aim.

When submitting a book to a publisher, Watts said it is important to have a top-notch cover letter. At her company, it takes several weeks for an author to get a response on whether his book is being considered for publication.

If rejected by one publisher, Watts recommends moving on and trying other companies.
