SPRINGVILLE — City leaders say they'll consider allowing chickens in residential areas.

David and Lela Allmendinger approached the Springville City Council on Tuesday seeking permission to raise chickens on their property.

"No neighbor is against it," Lela Allmendinger said. "Some already have chickens."

She said she would like to have up to six chickens, just to be self-sufficient, but no roosters.

Before the council can act on the issue, at least two council members must step forward to get it on the agenda.

Councilman Ben Jolley said he opposed the idea because it didn't fit the community. However, Councilmen Phil Bird and Dean Olsen said they would like to pursue it.

The Provo City Council recently approved up to six chickens in some residential zones.
