Perhaps the most intriguing matchup this morning will pit three-time champion Doug Bybee against Scott Hailes, a former U.S. Junior Amateur champion from West Bountiful, who just got his amateur status back after playing as a professional. The winner of that match will face the winner of Barton and Crawford.
In the playoff, Crawford, a Dixie State golfer, birdied the first hole, while Denny Job was eliminated. At the second hole, Schutjer birdied to claim a spot and then Peterson made a testy birdie putt.
Weight missed an 8-foot birdie putt and figured he was going to the next hole, but Jeff Powars, Paul Norman and Bill Probst each bogeyed, giving Weight the final match- play spot.
Utah Jazz guard Kyle Korver played again Thursday and was unhappy with his second-round 87, which gave him a two-day total of 173. Still, he said he had "a great time" playing in the State Am.
"I putted better but hit the ball way worse," Korver said. "If I could have combined today's putting with yesterday's hitting I would have had a decent round. I'm disappointed and wished I could have played better."
After today's two match-play rounds, eight players will be left for Saturday's quarterfinals. By Saturday night, just two players will be left to battle it out Sunday for the State Amateur 36-hole final.
