Playoff sends final 4 into State Am match play
LAYTON — As usual, the biggest excitement of Day 2 of the men's State Amateur golf tournament came late in the day as the shadows were long across Valley View Golf Course and most of the competitors had gone home.
It was the playoff to see who earned the final coveted spots for the match play portion of the tournament, which begins this morning with 32 golfers competing.
When all the scores were counted just before 7 p.m., eight golfers were left to compete for four spots to determine matches against the top four seeds.
The playoff lasted just two holes as Cameron Crawford, Kevin Peterson and Rocky Schutjer each made birdies and Tyler Weight made a par at the second hole to claim the 32nd spot.
Weight's reward? A 9 a.m. match today against defending champion Dan Horner.
"I'm the last guy and I get to take on the champ," said Weight, a 22-year-old from Springville as he stood at the edge of the No. 2 green. Weight said he was playing some of the best golf of his life earlier this year and he hopes the momentum from Thursday evening carries over.
While Weight takes on Horner, Schutjer, Peterson and Crawford get to play the best players from the two days of medal play: Robbie Fillmore, Ben Schilleman and Andrew Barton.
Schilleman and Fillmore, who had shared the first-round lead, both shot 70 and were named co-medalists, while Barton was another stroke back at 138 after his second straight 69.
Fillmore, a senior-to-be at BYU, finished his round at noon, two hours before Schilleman even teed off and took off for home in Provo. In past years, a playoff was held to determine the medalist, but the rules have been changed and the two players shared the honor when Schilleman missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole in the last group of the day.
For Schilleman, who lives less than two miles from the golf course, this will be his first time in match play. He's attending summer school at Utah State this summer and had a test postponed earlier this week so he could play in the State Am.
After getting to 3-under par on the day and 9-under for the tournament, Schilleman made his first bogey of the tournament at No. 15 and parred in.
"It's bittersweet," he said. "I would have liked to have won it."
Fillmore didn't seem the least bit concerned about where he ended up in medal play when he left the golf course early in the afternoon. And he's not worried who he plays, figuring he needs to beat everyone to win the State Am title.
"To be honest, I don't even look at the seeds," said Fillmore. "I try not to get caught up in all that. It doesn't matter. There are enough good golfers it's hard to win any match."
