A 2-year-old boy who was severely burned when a power line fell on him while playing on his aunt's backyard swing set in Bountiful continues to receive treatment in the hospital, but his family is optimistic that he will recover.

The family of Jake Marland issued a statement Wednesday updating his condition and thanking the many people who have assisted since the June 30 accident, which caused second- and third-degree electrical burns over 29 percent of his body.

"He has now been through two surgeries to remove damaged tissue and to begin the recovery process," the statement said. "While his condition is still life-threatening, he seems to be making progress toward his recovery every day."

The family said it expects Jake to remain in the University of Utah Burn Trauma Intensive Care Unit for several weeks, and he possibly could be there for a couple of months.

Jake's parents, Jenny and Scott Marland, are both members of the National Ski Patrol and the Brighton Volunteer Ski Patrol, and having been through emergency care training they are thankful for the "outstanding level of care" that they believe Jake has been receiving.

"We would like to express a sincere 'Thank You' to the Bountiful City Police Department, South Davis Metro Fire, University Hospital's AirMed, and everyone else who responded," the family statement said. "The level of professionalism, quality of care and kindness shown by these agencies was truly amazing. Their swift professional actions are a testament to their outstanding organizations and the training they have received. Our thanks and gratitude go out to these heroes."

The family also called the BTICU at the University of Utah "one of the truly elite burn centers in the United States." They said that the care for Jake and support for the family have been exceptional.

The family also thanked extended family, friends and other people throughout the community for their support during the process.

In lieu of sending flowers or gifts, the family has set up an account at America First Credit Union under the name of Jake Marland. Donations will help with Jake's expenses during the coming months.

The family said part of the donated money will be given to the BTICU.
